Follow-Up: Exploring Brits’ Perspectives on Energy Consumption Challenges

Following our recent survey on energy consumption challenges, we’re excited to share the insightful findings with you in this follow-up blog post. At, we believe in transparency and collaboration, and your input plays a vital role in shaping our strategies for a sustainable future. As a quick reminder, our survey methodology was carefully designed in collaboration with YouGov, a reputable research firm known for its extensive nationwide surveys. We meticulously selected a diverse group of 860 participants from various regions across the UK, considering factors such as income, house type, education level, and sustainability interests. Our focus was on individuals within medium and high-income brackets, including those earning between 75% and 200% of the median income, as well as those exceeding 200% of the median income. We also targeted respondents who previously expressed agreement with statements emphasising their commitment to sustainability and technological advancements. Administered on April 23, 2024, the survey aimed to explore public sentiment towards energy-saving products and sustainability initiatives, providing valuable insights into consumer preferences and behaviours related to energy efficiency.
 We reached out to Brits with a simple yet profound question: “What do you think are the biggest challenges in energy consumption in the UK?” Their responses shed light on a wide array of concerns, reflecting the complex landscape of energy consumption in the country. Below, we present the most frequently mentioned concerns that people have shared, offering valuable insights into the pressing issues faced by individuals and communities alike in managing energy consumption effectively.
 
 
  • Cost  : According to the responses gathered, 182 individuals identified cost as a significant challenge. Many respondents emphasised the financial burden related to energy consumption, encompassing expenses such as the high cost of renewable energy, installation charges for energy-saving devices, and overall energy expenditures.
  • Dependancy on Fossil Fuel  : There’s a concern about the UK’s reliance on fossil fuels, which contribute to carbon emissions and environmental degradation. This was expressed in 264 out of 860 of the responses, meaning 30% who took part in our survey are concerned about the dependency of fossil fuel, making this the most common answer.
  • Government Policies and Inaction 131 respondents voiced frustrations regarding government policies, citing issues such as the lack of investment in renewable energy, delays in meeting targets, the influence of vested interests, and concerns about government corruption or self-interest. Additionally, respondents expressed worries about the government’s responses to conflicts in other countries, such as Ukraine or Palestine.
  • Infrastructure  82 respondents identified infrastructure challenges as significant obstacles in the energy sector. They highlighted issues such as outdated grids and a lack of storage capacity for renewable energy as critical concerns within the infrastructure landscape.
  • Consumer Behaviour and Awareness 46 respondents emphasised the importance of consumer behaviour and awareness regarding energy consumption and its environmental impact. They underscored the necessity for consumer buy-in, changes in habits, and heightened awareness as key factors in addressing energy challenges.
  • Renewable Energy Investment  A recurring concern voiced by participants, mentioned a total of 263 times, centred around the inadequate investment in renewable energy sources like wind and solar power. This deficiency in funding obstructs the shift towards adopting more sustainable energy solutions.
  • Corporate Greed: Respondents  Respondents highlighted apprehensions about the profit-driven behaviour of energy corporations, which was referenced 29 times. There were concerns regarding their hesitancy to invest in sustainable initiatives and their tendency to prioritise financial gains over environmental considerations.
  • Housing Challenges  Respondents brought up 162 instances of concerns regarding poorly insulated homes, outdated infrastructure, and the necessity for retrofitting to enhance building energy efficiency.
  • Public Awareness and Education  Public Awareness and Education: Respondents emphasised the importance of addressing energy challenges through improved public understanding, countering misinformation, and implementing education and awareness campaigns, mentioned 78 times.
